Production of oxygen from air comprises pressure swing adsorbing oxygen from pre-cleaned compressed process air enriched with oxygen using a molecular sieve arranged as an adsorber in a pressure vessel; and removing the desorbed oxygen from the pressure vessels in variable time intervals with sieve regeneration. Preferred Features: The air is oxygen-enriched waste air produced during biological cleaning of effluent. The waste air contains at least 30 vol.% oxygen. The oxygen produced is re-fed to the plant for processing effluent.. Carbon dioxide is removed from the air before the pressure swing adsorption is carried out and is used as neutralizing agent for alkaline effluent.
