The apparatus has a spreader, slicer and moisture extractor (25) which leads a knitted fabric web (12) with moisture content of 65 to 15 percent to a twin belted compactor (17). A dryer delivery unit leads the knitted fabric web from the twin belted compactor to a special dryer (20) which dries the knitted fabric web at a tension free state. - DETAILED DESCRIPTION - From the special dryer, a conveyor (23) and a scray (24) transport the knitted fabric web to a two-roller compactor which compacts the web to a desired weight per surface area of less than two percent residual shrinkage. The special dryer has opposing nozzles that sprays hot air to the web mounted on endless rollers, to dry the web to within 10 to zero percent moisture.
