To deactivate high explosive (HE) ammunition, initially a charge (5) to give breaking points in the shell casing (2) of the projectile (3) and also a charge (1) to deactivate the explosive payload (4) are placed at the round to be destroyed. The two charges are set off, with a time delay ( DELTA t) between them, for the explosive to be detonated after cracking the shell case. The first charge forms fracture points in the shell casing as one or more slits or openings and makes the casing at least partially brittle. The first charge can be an explosive cutting cord. The second charge sets off the payload, for the explosive forces to be dissipated through the shell case breaks without fragmentation.
