A videophone switching system which has holding and forwarding functions. The system includes multiple videophone terminals and a reproduction device for reproducing data on speech and image indicatingholding, and a communication control unit for multiple-point communication, which interconnect the videophone terminals via a communication line. The communion control unit establishes a connection between a first videophone terminal and a second videophone terminal. If the second videophone terminal is placed in a held state, the speech and image data is sent from the reproduction device to the first videophone terminal. In order to perform forwarding in the held state, a connection between a third videophone terminal and the second one is established. When the second videophone terminal (or the third one) is hung up, a connection between the first videophone terminal and the third one (or the second one) is established.
