The longitudinal seat adjuster for a motor vehicle has an upper rail (4) sliding in a lower rail (5) under motor action. One rail has a drive rack (21) and the other a pinion (14). A position lock cam (11) retains the two racks together during an impact. The cam can be actuated by a relative movement between the bearing (16) of the pinion and the rack.
