PURPOSE: A system and a method for authenticating a customer by using the iris recognition are provided to correctly authenticate a customer of an ATM(Automatic Teller Machine) by recognizing the iris of the customer. CONSTITUTION: An ATM(100) includes a card reader(1), a customer operation unit(2), a display unit(3), an iris recognizing sensor(4), an iris information analyzing unit(5), a teller operation unit(6), a touch screen(7), and a central processing unit(8). The iris recognizing sensor consists of light emitting sensors, a light receiving lens, and a photoelectric transducer. The iris information analyzing unit analyzes the signal output from the iris recognizing sensor and converts the signal into data. The central processing unit provides and processes various ATM services via an interface(9) connected with a host and controls the motions of components. The light emitting sensors of the iris recognizing sensor emit beams to detect the pattern of the iris of a customer. The light receiving lens receives the beams reflected onto the iris. The photoelectric transducer converts the received beams into an electrical signal.
