PURPOSE: A method for controlling kickdown of an automatic transmission is provided to carry out the releasing part and coupling part control of kickdown by compensating the engine output change according to the change of an altitude, thereby reducing the transmission shock in case of the kickdown transmission. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling kickdown of an automatic transmission includes the steps of receiving atmospheric pressure information detected by a sensing element(ST22), determining a high place by comparing the received atmospheric pressure information with a predetermined value when the atmospheric pressure information is transmitted from the sensing element to a controller of the automatic transmission and kickdown transmission conditions are satisfied, and setting an initial duty for carrying out the releasing part control and a coupling part control of the automatic transmission for compensating an output decreasing on the high place(ST23-ST28), and carrying out the duty control according to a set duty pattern.
