PURPOSE: A device for recording and reproducing an optical disc is provided to optimally and compatibly carry out the recording and reproducing for discs of different standards, thereby promoting the convenience of users. CONSTITUTION: A device for recording and reproducing an optical disc includes a pickup part for detecting optical signals from discs or recording information on the discs, a control part for discriminating kinds of the discs from the detected signals and controlling the recording/reproducing according to the discriminated disc kinds, a signal processing part for reading data of first and second discs from the signals detected from the pickup part and detecting control information existing in control information areas of the discs, and a data processing part for processing data by using the detected control information.
