PURPOSE: A method for preventing double IP allocation using an ICMP(Internet Control Message Protocol) ping in a DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server is provided to prevent a collision of IP addresses by allocating an IP address to a DHCP client only in case that another host having the IP address doesn't exist. CONSTITUTION: If an IP address allocation request is received from a DHCP client(S1), a DHCP server generates an ICMP ping packet in case that an IP address to allocate exists in a DHCP free IP address table(S2). Then the DHCP server registers the information of a relevant event in a DHCP ping entry(S3). However, in case that there is no IP address to allocate in the DHCP free IP address table, the DHCP server discards the DHCP client's IP address allocation request(S4).
