<p>Process for preparing polyene aldehydes of formula (I) comprises: (a) reacting a cyclic acetal of formula (II) with a 1-alkoxy-1,3-diene of formula (III) in the presence of a Lewis or Bronsted acid; (b) hydrolysing the product of formula (IV) to obtain an aldehyde of formula (V); and (c) cleaving the alcohol R<5>OH from (V) under basic or acidic conditions: A = optionally methyl-substituted conjugated polyene group; R<1>, R<2> = H or Me; R<3>, R<4> = H or 1-4C alkyl; R<5> = 1-6C alkyl.</p> |
