PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide inexpensive iron powder for decomposing organic halogen compounds which can start the decomposition of the organic halogen compounds without needing a transition time when used. SOLUTION: This iron powder has at least one metal selected from the group consisting of nickel copper, cobalt and molybdenum on the surface and the surface portions except the metal portions are covered with oxidized iron coating films, wherein the content of the metal is 0.01 to 10 mass % based on the total amount of the iron powder and the thickness of the oxidized iron coating film is >=30 nm.
