PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control appropriately a movable cutter mounted on a carriage for suppressing inconvenience such as a cutting failure. SOLUTION: The carriage 2 is supported on a printer body 1 reciprocatively along a direction transverse to a paper feeding direction. A cutter rest, 5 is mounted on the printer body 1 along a moving direction of the carriage 2. A cutter unit 3 having the movable cutter 4 is detachably mounted on the carriage 2 and the movable cutter 4 cuts a paper cooperating with the cutter rest 5 when the carriage 2 moves. An EEPROM adapted to memorize information regarding the movable cutter 4 is mounted on the cutter unit 3 and the information is read from the EEPROM and written to it by a controlling part of the printer body 1. The cutter unit 3 is controlled by the information memorized in the EEPROM.
