PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compactly store an automatic tilt mechanism around an upper column. SOLUTION: When an electric motor 7 is driven to rotate a feed screw shaft 11 so as to axially move a nut member 13 together with a journal 14, the journal 14 acts a rotating force on the upper column 4 so as to turn the upper column 4 around a tilt pin 5 while sliding in a slide groove 15 in a bracket 4a of the upper column 4 together with a slider 16 in order to tilt the upper column 4 generally in vertical direction.
