PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-pollution unleaded high-octane number fuel oil for gasoline engines, excellent in automotive driving performance. SOLUTION: This fuel oil for gasoline engines meets the following requirements: (1) 3-10 vol.% of a fraction with a boiling point of <25 deg.C, 35-50 vol.% of a fraction with a boiling point of >=25 deg.C but <75 deg.C, 25-40 vol.% of a fraction with a boiling point of >=75 deg.C but <125 deg.C, 10-30 vol.% of a fraction with a boiling point of >=125 deg.C but <175 deg.C, and <=5 vol.% of a fraction with a boiling point of >=175 deg.C, (2) the research octane number of each of the above fractions is >=70, (3) the exhaust gas index Y defined by the formula: Y=1.07BZ +0.12TO+0.11EB+0.05XY+0.03C9++A+0.005 [100-(BZ+TO+EB+XY+C9+A)] (BZ, TO, EB, XY and C9+A are the contents(vol.%) of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and >=9C aromatic fraction, respectively) is <=5, (4) the benzene content is <=1 vol.% and the sulfur content <=40 ppm, and (5) the research octane number is 89-92.
