PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gallic acid derivative which is safe and has low production cost, and high antimicrobial property, to provide a method for producing the gallic acid derivative and also to provide an antimicrobial agent. SOLUTION: This new gallic acid derivative is represented by the general formula (1), has antimicrobial property and is prepared from gallic acid as the raw material [in the formula (1), R1 is an alkyl represented by CnH2n+1 (wherein n=1-12 integer); R2, R3, R4 are each a substituent selected from H, prenyl, geranyl, farnesyl, methyl and ethyl and also at least one of R2, R3, R4 is a substituent selected from prenyl, geranyl, farnesyl, methyl and ethyl].
