PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide respective methods for producing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4- methyl-2-pentenoyl)-2-pyrone and 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-2- pyrone. SOLUTION: The 1st objective method for producing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4- methyl-2-pentenoyl)-2-pyrone comprises a reaction between 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-6- methyl-2-pyrone and isobutyraldehyde in the presence of a 4-6C azacycloalkane and molecular sieves at 10-40 deg.C. The 2nd objective method for producing 4- hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-2-pyrone comprises reducing the above 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methyl-2-pentenoyl)-2-pyrone. By these methods, an active ingredient for a harmful arthropod controlling agent and an intermediate therefor can be produced advantageously.
