PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe corneal probe for treatment. SOLUTION: A thermal keratoplasty system and method heats and reshapes a cornea locally in a manner that minimizes the regression of orthokeratology. The system includes the probe 12 coupled to a power source 14 capable of providing given levels of power, frequency, and duration for generating a thermal profile in the cornea extending from an epithelium to a corneal stroma. The electric return to the probe is an eye speculum 202 for holding an eyelid open. With the probe 12 in contact with the cornea, energy is fed from the power source 14 to the eyeball and then returned to the power source 14 via the eye speculum 202. The energy from the power source is focused by a tip 204 of the probe, which heats and denatures the cornea locally to cause secondary constriction of the corneal tissue. A pattern of denatured regions can be created about the cornea to correct the visual acuity. |
