PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which can culture fishes or shellfishes in a state capable of submerging in sand without causing the deterioration of a culturing environment due to the accumulation of contaminants such as excrements and feed residues, and to provide a method for breeding the same. SOLUTION: This device for culturing fishes or shellfishes, comprising a breeding water tank 1 for breeding the fishes or the shellfishes, sand or a sand- like material 14 spread over the bottom of the water tank in a stratified state in a thickness permitting the fishes or shellfishes to submerge in the sand or sand-like material, a means 3 (a water pipe for connecting a water supply tank 2 to the water tank 1 by a siphon action in the figure) for forming a water flow from the lower side of the layer of the sand or the like to the upper side, and a means (for example, a drainage port disposed above the sand layer) for discharging the contaminants in the water tank. The method for culturing the fishes or the shellfishes such as Paralichthys olivaceus by the use of the device.
