PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively obtain a high-quality carbon fiber having a uniform tow shape free from tow crack, bias filling, etc., in excellent productivity in producing a carbon fiber precursor acrylic fiber while preventing interference of adjacent yarns and yarn mixing by spinning an acrylonitrile-based polymer, drying and densifying a swollen yarn to produce an carbon fiber precursor acrylic fiber. SOLUTION: Swollen yarns 1 are guided by using a roll 2 having channels 3 to produce a carbon fiber precursor acrylic fiber. In the operation, the channel shape of the roller with the channels changes so as to continuously reduce the width from the top part of the channel toward the bottom of the channel, the crosssectional shape of the channel has a flat straight line part at the bottom of the channel and the side face reaching from the channel top part to the flat straight line part is smoothly formed by a curved line and/or straight line and satisfies conditions of the formulas, 1.3<=X/h<=3.0 and X/Y <=5.5 (X is width of channel top part; Y is length of channel bottom; h is depth of channel).
