PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protecting cap for a shank of a tool holder having high dust proofing performance. SOLUTION: Each tool holder T being ready in a tool magazine 10 has the shank 111 protected by the protecting cap 90 during indexing operation or not, and so fine dust accompanying machining is prevented from being mixed with oil and deposited on the shank 111. Since the protecting cap 9 can be disconnected from the shank 111 of the tool holder T only after removed from the tool magazine 10 together with the tool holder T and delivered to a giving/ receiving position located outside the magazine 10, the shank 111 is exposed to the outside only in an extremely short time when it is pulled off by a tool exchanging arm and turned. Therefore, extremely high protecting function is achieved.
