PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating an ink jet printhead which forms a large spray of liquid before the spray of liquid comes in contact with a surface of a moving receiver. SOLUTION: In order to form an image with a high resolution, ink jet orifices to be positioned with a predetermined interval in a range of less than 1000μm, more preferably from 50 to 500μm from a receiver medium, is provided. An electric driving signal suitable for forming a spray in a printhead is transmitted to the printhead. A free spray is formed between the orifice and the receiver member in accordance with the driving signal and the spray deposits on the receiver member substantially without splashed spray.
