PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the labor in measuring the paper thickness of a paper fed from the paper feeding hopper as much as possible in a serial dot printer with a multiple stage paper feeding hopper. SOLUTION: In the case the first stage hopper is replenished with papers among first to fifth stage hoppers 7-11, execution of the replenishment is stored as replenishment execution information. In the case of feeding a paper from the first stage hopper to a printer printing part 1, the stored replenishment execution information is referred to. In the case there was execution of the replenishment, measurement result of the paper thickness by a paper thickness measuring and adjusting part 4 and the position adjusted by the printer printing part 1 (hereinafter referred to as the printing part) are obtained, and the adjusted position is stored. Absence of replenishment is stored as the replenishment execution information so that the position of the printing part is adjusted. Moreover, in the case a paper is fed from the second stage hopper and the stored replenishment execution information indicates absence of the replenishment, paper thickness measurement and printing part position adjustment are not executed if the last time paper feeding operation was from the same second stage hopper. In the case the last time paper feeding operation was from another hopper, the stored adjusted position for the papers in the second stage hopper is read out for adjusting the position of the printing part.
