PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an impact from occurring when a movable electrode of a spot welding apparatus comes into contact with a work, and to hold an appropriate press-contact condition of the movable electrode against the work. SOLUTION: A press-contact member held by piston rods 15, 25 displaceable in front and back by a hydraulic cylinder 10 is, like a movable electrode on a spot welding apparatus, so designed as to travel rapidly to make press-contact with a work W that is to be brought into press-contact by the press-contact member. Also by achieving a proper stop of traveling of the press-contact member S when it comes into contact with the surface of the work W and its rapid transition to a press-contact condition against the work W, an impact produced upon contact by the press-contact member S against the work W can be eased or prevented, and thus a deformation or damage on the work W is prevented. Also the press-contact member S is so designed as to come closer to and go off the work W, to immediately stop its forward traveling accompanied by a resilient movement when it comes into press-contact with the work W, and to hold the surface of the work W in the press-contact condition.
