A method of performing data communications comprises using multi-level symbols having good correlation distance properties between sequences belonging to the set of symbols or a plurality of sets of symbols. The multi-level sequences are partitioned into sets according to a correlation distance metric such that the respective sets can be processed in the receiver substantially independently. Reception is performed by means of an <i>M</i>-ary receiver comprising a bank of <i>M</i> correlators, each matched to a respective multi-level sequence, including a greatest peak detector of size <i>M</i> to detect the symbol transmitted, and a plurality of banks of correlators, the correlators of each bank being of a predetermined length. The multi-level sequences may be provided by an <i>M</i>-ary Bi-Code Keying (MBCK) or a Sequence Coded Modulation (SCM) scheme. Orthogonal sequence multiplexing may be used. Data may be encoded using QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation). |
