The present invention employs a separation finger manipulated to simultaneously translate along a curved path and to rotate as it is inserted into and removed from a stream of web material. In some embodiments, the elements creating such motion are a pivot arm and a translation member mounted for rotation about respective axes. The pivot arm is preferably rotatably coupled to the separation finger at a third axis, while the separation finger is preferably coupled to the translation member for translational motion therealong. In other embodiments, a cam follower and a pivot arm are mounted for rotation about respective axes, and a cam member provides a guiding surface guiding the cam follower and attached separation finger in a curved path by a combination of separation finger rotation and translation. The cam follower is preferably coupled to the pivot arm and is guided in the curved path by the cam member. |
