A process for flash-spinning a web (24) of plexifilamentary film-fibril strands (20) of synthetic fiber-forming polymer and laying down the web (24) to form a nonwoven batt (34) material therefrom includes the steps of generating a spin fluid consisting essentially of synthetic fiber-forming polymer and a spin agent, flash-spinning the spin fluid at a pressure greater than the autogenous pressure of the spin fluid into a spin cell (10) maintained at a lower pressure to form a web (24) of plexifilamentary film-fibril strands (20) of synthetic fiber-forming polymer, applying an electrostatic charge to the web (24) by passing the web (24) through an electric corona and laying the web (24) onto a grounded surface (32) to form a batt (34) of plexifilamentary film-fibril strands (20) suitable for consolidation into a sheet.
