An electric machine having a core structure with an array of teeth and slots to accommodate an armature or field winding. To retain a winding therein, the slot is shaped to form a main section leading into a base section that is outwardly flared to create a wedge space. The winding is ensheathed in a collar having a main section that conforms to the main section of the slot and an outwardly flared base section that conforms to the base section of the slot. Placed in the wedge space is a wedge which holds the base section of the collar against the base section of the slot whereby the collar-ensheathed winding retained in the slot is highly resistant to pull-out forces. Another type of collar, for use in slots without flared base, is shaped with mounting lugs extending from opposite ends of the side walls of the collar to be secured to the front and back face of the core. |
