PURPOSE: A method for correcting a byte error at a backup device is provided for the correction of the maximum one byte error without the initialization or change of the original data by adding a redundancy bit to the original data in the user-designated word size. CONSTITUTION: In the fixed data backup, an added bit calculator(12) counts the size of the redundancy bit to be added according to the size of the original data. An encoding unit(11) adds the redundancy bit as many as counted to the original data, and stores the data to a memory(14). When the error is detected, a decoding unit(13) corrects the error concerned to the original data by using the added redundancy bit.
