The device has a module (10) of airbag (12) and gas generator (14), with covering (20). This is formed as a long hollow body with a chamber (16) containing the module. The walls (22,24) of the covering decrease towards the front into a continuous front edge (30), which forms a breaking point for the inflating airbag. The hollow body has a first wide section, in which the airbag module is fastened, and a second narrower section to inflate and guide the airbag when the module is triggered.
