The engine exhaust system has a first flow passage forming an exhaust return line connected to the inlet system. The inlet system is connected to the exhaust system via a second flow passage and a flow control element is connected at least into the exhaust return line. The second flow passage is a blow down line via which a connection can be made for a pressure drop between the inlet and outlet systems with the exhaust return system activated. The engine has at least one exhaust gas turbocharger (9), an exhaust system (4) and an inlet system (3). The exhaust system has a first flow passage forming an exhaust return line connected to the inlet system and the inlet system is connected to the exhaust system via a second flow passage and a flow control element is connected at least into the exhaust return line. The second flow passage is a blow down line (16) via which a flow connection can be made for a pressure drop between the inlet and outlet systems with the exhaust return system (12) activated.
