Determination of alcohol content within a sample, such as a drink, based on weight and density measurements that are more accurate than alternative volumetric measurements

Device comprises distillation apparatus (1-6), a weighing system (7) and a device (8, 12, 13) for determining density and or the refractive index, a thermostat (9), thermometer (10) and electronics and computer (11) for measuring, storing and processing measurement data. The alcohol content of a sample is determined by measuring its mass and density. Prior to distillation a sample is weighed. Alcohol is then separated off using a steam flow. Density and mass of both the sample and the distilled alcohol are then determined. The original alcohol content of the sample is determined using appropriate look-up tables.
