The data documentation method has actualized data held in a data memory (2) within the automobile (1) and transmitted to an external call-center (5) via a radio data transmission link. The call-center responds to an intiating signal for transfer of the data to a configuration-documentation server (7), entering the data in a databank (6) in chronological order. The call-center can be linked to a compatability-documentation server (9), for providing a compatability check for products fitted to the automobile. An Independent claim for a device for documentation of automobile data is also included.
