Perylene tricarboxylic acid imide derivatives (I) are new. Perylene tricarboxylic acid imide derivatives of formula (I) are new. R1-R6 = H or a 1-6 membered ring including pyridyl, triazinyl, quinolyl, acridinyl or oxazolyl, and can be substituted by the following groups, which can also be R1-R5: (a) halo; (b) 1-21C alkyl or cycloalkyl, all optionally substituted; (c) OR13; (d) CN; (e) N(R14)(R15); (f) COR16; (g) N(R17)COR18; (h) N(R19)COOR20; (i) N(R21)CON(R22)(R23); (j) NHSO2R24; (k) SO2R25 or SOR26; (l) SO2R27; (m) CON(R28)(R29); (n) SO2N(R30)(R31); (o) N=NR32; (p) OCOR33; and (q) OCONHR34; R13 = H, alkyl, aryl, 3-24C cycloalkyl, (hetero)aryl, optionally substituted benzyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, methylphenyl, naphthyl, cycloalkyl, thienyl, pyranyImethyl or furfuryl; R14 and R15 = as in (b); R16 = as in (b); R17 = as in (b); R18 = H, alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, methylphenyl, naphthyl, cycloalkyl, thienyl, pyranyImethyl or furfuryl; R19 and R20 = as in (b); R21-R23 = as in (b) and (c); R24 = as in (b); R32 = the residue of a coupling component or phenyl optionally substituted by halo, alkyl or O-alkyl; R25-R31, and R33 = as in (b); R34 = as in (a); R1-R6 = can also be H, where 1-4 of them are as in (a)-(q). Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a process in which perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid 3,4-anhydride-9,10-imide is monodecarboxylated to give a compound (I); (B) a process in which (I) is activated and used as a label.
