METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMPROVING COLD TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE OF DISK DRIVE

PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for improving cold temperature performance of a disk drive is provided to make cold temperature drive of a disk possible by preventing damage and data loss induced by cold temperature. CONSTITUTION: In a method for preventing cold temperature-induced damage to a spindle motor assembly of a direct access storage device(DASD), a method for improving cold temperature performance of a disk drive comprises the steps of measuring a temperature of the DASD; applying a current to windings of the spindle motor assembly for an amount of time required for the temperature of the spindle motor assembly to rise to a minimum threshold temperature for normal operation; and starting spinning operation of the spindle motor assembly.
