PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture reading device capable of reading an original with stable density regardless of the vertical movement of the original to be carried on a reading glass or the difference in the thickness of the paper. SOLUTION: This picture reading device on which an automatic original carrying device is loaded is provided with carrying rollers (not shown in a figure) for carrying an original P through a bent carriage path to a reading position, paper ejection rollers 5 for ejecting a read original P, and a platen 12 made of elastic materials for regulating the original position so that the original P can be carried to a reading position between the carrying rollers and the paper ejection rollers 5. This platen 12 is held around a rotation center 31 orthogonal to the carrying direction so as to be rotatable in the upper part of the reading position, and rotated or bent according to the difference of the carrying speed of the carrying rollers and the paper ejection rollers 5 so that the original position can be regulated.
