PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the reliable reproducing performance over a necessary and sufficient long period when an MR head is applied to a recording/ reproducing device for a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: In the tape drive device for a tape-like recording medium, the value of a bias current to be applied to the MR head is made variable at the time of retry, and also such bias current value is set, as considered to be appropriate according to the evaluation result correspondingly obtained for every bias current value which is made variable. By setting the value of the bias current to be applied to the MR head in such a manner, the setting of the appropriate bias current value corresponding to the property changing due to the wear of the MR head is attained.
