PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the display gradation without increasing subfields to realize the reduction of the moving picture false contour and to assure good display of the SN ratio. SOLUTION: Aγreverse correcting part 19 applies aγreverse correction calculation to the 8-bit data converted by an A/D conversion part 12 and the resultant data are outputted as 10-bit data. A gradation increase part 20 divides each of this 10-bit data into 8 bits of the higher order and 2 bits of the lower order. Then the average of the 2 bits of the lower order of pixels C and D is calculated among the four pixels A, B, C, and D over the contiguity line of a PDP. Processing for allocating the display minimum level to each of the 8 bit data for the pixels A, B, C and D is performed on the basis of the calculation result by using a pattern which is different in the cases of the odd number field and the even number field.
