PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a callback method by which the user of a portable telephone can immediately cope with such a case that an incoming call requires an urgent answer by easily retrieving the telephone number of the originator of the call. SOLUTION: The portable telephone is provided with a sound transmission and reception control section 3.2, a mail function control section 3.3 which processes mail data using characters through a radio section 2, and a memory 4 which stores data about addresses, telephone numbers, and mail addresses. The telephone is also provided with a memory dial control section 3.1 which writes or reads out data in or from the memory 4, a displaying section 5 which displays the data stored in the memory 4 and various information, and an operating section 6 which performs various operations and inputs by operating a plurality of key switches. In addition, the telephone is also provided with a control section 3 which makes callback to the originator of the incoming call by controlling the control sections 3.2, 3.3, and 3.1 when a specific switch of the operating section 6 is depressed.
