PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive effect type magnetic head wherein characteristic deterioration due to oxygen diffusion is not generated, in a magnetoresistive effect film to which an oxide is applied for obtaining a high changing ratio of magnetoresistance. SOLUTION: In the magnetoresistive effect type head, a fixed layer is constituted of a ferromagnetic film 12/an oxide film 13/a ferromagnetic film 14 and oxygen diffusion is suppressed by incorporating an element (Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Zr, etc.), having strong bonding force to oxygen into the oxide film 13. The oxide film 13 is specified to have 5-30×10-10 m film thickness.
