The method for assembling the flange of a cable drum or hose reel comprises fitting wooden sectors (2A) into a circular rim (4) with a U-shaped cross-section. When the final sector is to be inserted a force is exerted into the plane of the disk to compress the other sectors and enlarge the remaining space to accommodate the last sector. Independent claims are included for: (b) apparatus for carrying out the process; and (b) a drum or reel obtained using the method.
