PURPOSE: A cable modem and a method for selecting an upstream channel in the cable modem are provided, which reduces a time required to initialize the cable modem. CONSTITUTION: According to the method, a cable modem(CM) is driven, and the cable modem acquires allocated upstream channel information stored in its own memory part. The cable modem receives UCD information corresponding to the upstream channel group information setting to itself, from UCD information transmitted from a CMTS(Cable Modem Termination System)(210). Then the cable modem sets an upstream channel, by referring to the received UCD information. The upstream channel information is included in the above UCD information, and the upstream channel information is constituted with type(1 byte), length(1 byte) and value(variable length).
