IDENTIFICATION METHOD FOR HOT BILLET

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure automatic marking and the like by imaging an end face of a hot billet carried down and accurately identifying the type and the like of the billet on the basis of the obtained image data. SOLUTION: A camera 14 for imaging an end face 12a of a hot billet 12 is installed beside a carrying means 10 for carrying hot billets 12 sequentially downward at given pitches that space them one from the next. Image data on the end face 12a captured by the camera 14 is subjected to image processing in an image processor 16. The image processor 16 regards a binary block in a binary image generated from the image data as the end face 12a of the hot billet 12 to calculate necessary information such as the shape, dimensions and brightness. The image processor 16 is connected to a control computer 18, which compares recognition information on the end face 12a recognized by the image processor 16 with stored information in the control computer 18 to determine whether a prescribed type of hot billet 12 is carried down or not.
