PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrical apparatus, having proper cooling efficiency, while having a heat exchanging section which is smaller than that of the conventional apparatus, and to provide a method for operating the same. SOLUTION: The apparatus 1, having a case 2 housing a heat-generating electrical component has an ambient air introducing section 4 for directly introducing ambient air into the case 2, to cool the inside of the case 2 by the ambient air other than a heat exchanging section 3 for performing heat exchange between the gas in the case 2 and the ambient air. The section 4 comprises, for example, an ambient air introducing port 41, an opening/closing ambient air introducing shutter 42 provided in the port 41, an ambient air introducing duct 43 for communicating the port 41 to an opening 24 formed on the case 2, a filter 44 provided in the duct 43, and an air blower 45. When operating the apparatus, especially cooling by sections 3 and 4 are performed simultaneously, as necessary, when the outside air temperature is high.
