PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the shape of a polygon through simple processing. SOLUTION: A polygon shape determination device has a horizontal component selecting and sum total calculating means 102 for calculating the sum total of horizontal components about sides of a polygon whose horizontal components have a given sign, a vertical component selecting and sum total calculating means 103 for calculating the sum total of vertical components about sides of the polygon whose vertical components have the given sign, a bounding rectangle calculating means 104 for calculating information about the rectangle bounding the polygon, and a determining means 105 for determining the shape of the polygon from the results of the horizontal component selecting and sum total calculating means 102, the vertical component selecting and sum total calculating means 103 and the bounding rectangle calculating means 104.
