PURPOSE: A portable computer having a soft reset function and a method for the soft reset are provided to protect the ongoing data when a system is halted suddenly. CONSTITUTION: The portable computer has a new microcomputer(12), a soft reset key(14), a CPU(Central Processing Unit)(2), a memory(4), a system controller(6), and a BIOS ROM(Basic Input Output System Read-Only Memory)(8). The portable computer performs power supply management function for supporting suspend two RAMs(Random Access Memories) via a Windows operating system. The memory performs a mode for sustaining the stored data by a self-refresh mode. When the suspend two RAMs are operated, the ongoing data are stored in the memory. The memory sustains data by receiving the power of a battery when a system is reset. The soft reset key formed on a portion of the portable computer is manipulated by a user when the system is halted suddenly. The reset is performed while the data stored in the memory are saved.
