A chip card (100) has a magnetic strip (120). A hybrid terminal (20) with a magnetic strip reader (22) and a chip card interface (12) runs an initialisation phase to assign a memory-specific ID key for the chip to account details stored on the magnetic strip placing it in the memory of a background memory device (30). In a later control operation run on clean chip card terminals (10) the chip ID key is read out to transmit appropriate account details via the stored assigned ID. Independent claims are also included for a configuration for executing a bank transaction by using a portable data carrier and for a hybrid terminal for use with this configuration.
