The tensioning device comprises a stationary housing (2) and tension arm (6) mounted in the housing so that it can be rotated by a shaft (5). A torsion spring (10) between the housing and tension arm supports the tension roller (8) on a tensioning means (9) with force-locking action and exerts an axial force on an annular friction lining (11) between the housing and friction disc (7) which is linked with the tension arm in a fixed position. The friction lining extends between structured contact surfaces of the housing and disc. In the installed position the structure of the contact surfaces runs parallel in the peripheral direction and allows for directional twisting of the friction lining.
