Highly concentrated nitric acid is used as nitrating agent in a method for the production of DNDA (ternary mixture of methyl/ethyl-bis-nitramines) by the nitration of N,N'-dimethylurea (I) and N,N'-diethylurea (II) followed by hydrolysis of the dinitro derivatives and condensation of the methyl- and ethyl-nitramines.
