The system includes an image pick-up system for detecting frames of image data. A memory (16) stores the image frames. A display subsystem (18) display the images derived from the image data frames. The user selects one of the frames and one of a number of data compression levels. A data compressor (36,38) compresses the image data in the selected frame according to the selected compression level. A display processor controls the display device for displaying the frame of compressed image data. Independent claims are also included for: (a) an imaging system (b) a method of storing image data.
