Describes a coating composition for the preparation of abrasion resistant coatings comprising: (A) a reaction mixture of (1) from 5 to 75 weight percent, based on the total weight of the coating composition, of silane monomer(s): (a) glycidoxy[(C1-C3)alkyl]tri(C1-C4) alkoxysilane; and (b) tetra (C1-C6)alkoxysilane, the weight ratio of (i) to (ii) ranging from 0.5:1 to 100:1; (2) a catalytic amount of aqueous acidic alumina sol, sufficient to provide from 0.25 to less than 5 weight percent based on the total weight of silane monomers, of particulate alumina; and (3) water in an amount sufficient to form hydrolysates of the silane monomers; and (B) coating composition adjuvant components; and optionally, an adhesion promoter, photopolymerization initiator and/or organic tintability additive provided that the composition does not contain further catalyst for reaction mixture (A). Also described are articles, e.g., lenses, having a tinted or non-tinted cured coating of the aforedescribed coating composition.
